Dyffryn Arth

Gwyn Evans, Dairy Farmer

At Dyffryn Arth, Gwyn Evans and his family milk 380 cows on a grass-based spring calving system. The family saw the opportunity to emphasise on the type of milk sold, and to be rewarded on the quality. Zero seasonality is a massive help to the business financially and weekly payments help with cash flow. Since moving to Mona Dairy, the farm has seen an instant ppl difference. The up to date data on milk quality from every collection is an invaluable management tool. The family also like the regular contact and visits from their Farmer Relationship Manager who is on hand to help with making fast decisions and taking action to overcome challenges.

The farm was bought in 1978 by Gwyn’s parents. With 451 acres of land, Dyffryn Arth is a grass-based, low-input farm. The family also runs a caravan park, therefore they have to show to holidaying customers that they are environmentally friendly and operating ethically.

The biggest challenge the farm faced previously was substantial seasonality penalties, and no interest in purchasing their spring milk. With two young children to take care of, the spring calving system allows the Evan’s family flexibility to live their desired lifestyle. Their milk quality suits this contract because it pays equally on butterfat and protein.

In a comment, Gwyn said: “We as a business are glad to be associated with Mona Dairy and we feel they are heading in the right direction, I’m looking forward to what the future brings with Mona Dairy.

We wish Mona Dairy a very prosperous future as we feel they share that prosperity with us as primary producers, and we haven’t felt like this in 45 years.”

The Evan’s family heard that a spring calving friendly company were looking for milk, as soon as Gwyn heard it was David Wynn-Finch’s business they decided to go for it. The direction Mona Dairy is working towards seemed like the best option for the business.

Gwyn said: “The fact that Mona Dairy’s Chairman is heavily invested in the business and supplying milk, adds to the security and trust of the company.”

The family visited the factory before signing their contract and were impressed by the technology being applied and the range of products the site are able to produce. They felt they shared many mutual aspirations with Mona Dairy and they like the ethos of the company as a whole.
